Best time of year for a yacht charter in Dubai

Dubai has two seasons on the water and they are nothing like each other. From October to April the weather is close to perfect and the city is full. From May to September it is very hot, the sea is like a warm bath, and the smart money books late in the day. Most visitors pick their date before they think about any of this, then wonder why the middle of the afternoon in July was hard work. This guide goes month by month. Plan B of Freedom Yacht runs all year from Dubai Harbour, so the notes here cover both halves honestly.
1. The short answer
If you can pick any date, go between late October and mid April, and book so that you are on the water for the last two hours of daylight. That is the best yachting weather in Dubai and the best light of the day.
If your dates are fixed and they land in summer, it is still very much worth doing. You just move the booking later. A 5pm departure in July is a lovely evening. A 1pm departure in July is a test of character.
2. Month by month
| Month | Air | Sea | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 19 to 24C | Around 22C | Excellent. Cool on deck after dark, bring a layer |
| February | 20 to 25C | Around 21C | Excellent. One of the most comfortable months |
| March | 22 to 28C | Around 23C | Very good. Water warming, days lengthening |
| April | 25 to 33C | Around 25C | Very good. The last easy month for midday |
| May | 29 to 38C | Around 28C | Good late in the day. Midday getting hard |
| June | 32 to 41C | Around 31C | Evenings only, realistically |
| July | 33 to 42C | Around 32C | Evenings only. Humid |
| August | 33 to 42C | Around 33C | Evenings only. The sea does not cool you |
| September | 31 to 39C | Around 32C | Improving. Late afternoon works again |
| October | 27 to 35C | Around 30C | Very good, and the warmest swimming of the year |
| November | 23 to 30C | Around 27C | Excellent. Many people call this the best month |
| December | 20 to 26C | Around 24C | Excellent, and busy. Book well ahead |
Figures are typical rather than guaranteed. Dubai does get the occasional grey day and a few rainy days a year, almost all between December and March.
3. The cool season, October to April
This is the main season and everything about it is easier. Daytime on deck is pleasant rather than punishing, so a midday charter works. The sea is calm more often. The light is clear.
The one thing visitors underestimate is how cool it gets after sunset between December and February. Out on the water, moving at speed, with damp swimwear, 20C feels a great deal colder than it sounds. Bring a jacket. Half the group who forget end up inside for the best part of the evening.
This is also peak season for tourism, which means the water is busier at weekends, the good slots go first and prices across the market firm up. If your date is in December or January, book early.
4. The hot season, May to September
Nobody should pretend summer in Dubai is mild. Daytime highs above 40C with high humidity make an unshaded deck genuinely unpleasant in the middle of the day.
That does not rule out a charter. It changes the shape of it.
- Go late. Board at 5pm or later. The last two hours of daylight are the whole point.
- Prioritise shade and air conditioning. A yacht with a proper air conditioned salon is worth far more in August than in January.
- Do not expect the sea to cool you. At 32C the water is close to body temperature. It is pleasant, not refreshing.
- Watch the humidity. It is the humidity rather than the number on the thermometer that makes it hard.
- Take the quieter water. Fewer boats out, easier anchorages, better photographs without other yachts in frame.
Prices across the Dubai market also tend to be softer in summer, which is a genuine advantage if you are flexible.
5. The best hours of any day
Whatever the month, the same pattern holds.
| Slot | Cool season | Hot season |
|---|---|---|
| Early morning | Calm, quiet, cool. Good for swimming | The only comfortable daylight hours |
| Midday | Pleasant, bright, busy | Avoid |
| Late afternoon to sunset | The best slot of all | The best slot of all |
| After dark | Cool, city lit, needs a layer | Warm and very pleasant |
The sunset slot wins in every month of the year. The sunset cruise guide has the exact boarding times to aim for in each month.
6. Sea conditions and wind
The Gulf is a shallow sea, which means it does not build long ocean swells. What it does build is short chop when the wind gets up, and that chop arrives quickly and drops quickly.
Mornings are usually the calmest part of the day. The breeze tends to build through the afternoon and ease again around sunset. Winter brings the occasional stronger system known locally as a shamal, which can make a day or two genuinely rough.
Boat size matters a lot here. A 36 metre hull handles conditions that would make a 12 metre boat miserable. If you are chartering in a windier month, that is a reason to go bigger rather than smaller, as the guide to the build explains.
7. When it is busiest, and prices
| Period | Demand | Advice |
|---|---|---|
| Late December to early January | Highest of the year | Book weeks ahead. New Year sells out first |
| February to April | High | Book two to three weeks ahead for weekends |
| May and September | Moderate | Good value, decent weather in the evening |
| June to August | Lowest | Most availability, softest rates |
| October to November | Rising | Arguably the best weather of the year |
8. Ramadan and public holidays
Ramadan moves each year by roughly eleven days. Charters run during Ramadan, but the character of the day changes. Daytime eating and drinking on deck is handled differently, and evening slots after iftar become very popular.
If your dates fall in Ramadan, simply ask. Operators deal with it every year and will tell you plainly what works. Eid afterwards is one of the busiest periods of the year on the water.
UAE National Day in early December and New Year both produce large demand, and both are excellent on the water because of the fireworks. They are also the two dates most likely to be fully booked.
9. Best months by what you want to do
| What you want | Best months | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Swimming and water toys | October, November, April, May | Warm water without punishing air temperature |
| Sunbathing on deck | November to March | Sun you can sit in for more than ten minutes |
| Photography | November to February | Clearest air and the best light |
| Overnight on board | October to April | Comfortable nights on deck |
| Best value | June to August | Softest demand, go late in the day |
| Large group events | October to April | Shade matters less, outdoor space works all day |
If an overnight is what you are after, read the overnight charter guide. If it is swimming, the swimming guide has the water temperatures in more detail.
10. How far ahead to book
- New Year's Eve: two to three months, and expect premium pricing
- December and January weekends: three to four weeks
- October to April weekends: two to three weeks
- Weekdays in season: one week is usually fine
- Summer: a few days is often enough
Sunset slots go before any other time of day, in every month. If the light matters to you, that is the booking to secure first.
10b. What to wear, season by season
This sounds trivial and it is the thing most visitors get wrong. Dubai on land and Dubai on the water at 27 knots are different climates.
| Season | Daytime on deck | After sunset |
|---|---|---|
| December to February | Light layers, swimwear underneath | A proper jacket. It genuinely gets cold at speed |
| March to May | Summer clothes, hat, sunglasses | A light layer is enough |
| June to September | As little as is decent, plus shade | Nothing extra needed. It stays warm |
| October to November | Summer clothes | A light layer late in the evening |
The winter evening point is the one worth repeating. Guests who forget a jacket between December and February end up inside for the best part of the evening, which is a waste of a sunset. Tell your group when you send the invitation, not on the day.
10c. Fog, dust and the days nobody mentions
Dubai gets two weather events that rarely appear in a tourism guide and both can affect a charter.
Fog appears on winter mornings, usually between December and March, when warm humid air sits over cooler water. It can be thick enough to delay a departure. It almost always burns off by mid morning, so an afternoon booking is unaffected.
Dust and haze arrive with strong winds, more often in spring and summer. They do not usually stop a charter but they flatten the view and soften the skyline. If photographs are the main reason for your booking, a clear winter day is the safer bet.
Neither is common enough to plan around if you only have one date. Together they are a reason to book the afternoon rather than first thing in the cooler months.
11. Quick answers
What is the single best month? November. Warm sea, kind air, clear light, before peak pricing arrives.
Is summer really that bad? In the middle of the day, yes. In the evening, no. It is a different booking, not a worse one.
Does it rain? Rarely, and mostly December to March. A handful of days a year.
Will we get seasick? Unlikely on a yacht this size in Gulf conditions. Mornings are calmest if you are worried.
Are charters cancelled for weather? Occasionally, for strong wind. Ask your operator what happens if conditions are poor and get the answer in writing.
Is there a month to avoid completely? No. Even August works if you board late and the yacht has shade and air conditioning. What changes through the year is the shape of the booking rather than whether it is worth doing. In winter you can take the whole afternoon. In high summer you take the last two hours of light and the first hour of darkness, which is a genuinely lovely way to spend an evening and is also the cheapest time of year to do it.
Does the sea get rough? Occasionally, usually with a winter shamal or a strong afternoon breeze. It is short chop rather than ocean swell, and a larger hull absorbs it comfortably. Morning is reliably the calmest part of any day in any season.
